You win some, you lose some...

Posted on 22. February 2010 00:12 - 156 comments

Of course easy to say when you already have a gold medal, but that is how it is. And that is why it’s an advantage to be an all-rounder at big championships. I had a great downhill run and was leading before the slalom. In the slalom I heard Kostelic and Bode had great runs. I wanted to get after the gold, so attack was the only option. Except for two small mistakes it looked pretty good till I straddled 10 sec before the finish line. I was about two tens behind Bode, but he had made a mistake in the last turns, so the gold was still within reach… Thant sucks! But I have had amazing games so far, so I’m not gonna be bummed out for very long.

(Aksel you are not concerned with your being making the Games of your life. Today to the giant I believed for you, I believe that it fit to your characteristics, and it's fantastic to see a skier strong and tall like you how moves in a race of slalom. I write to you from Catalonia, in the Pirineus

well i don't know about bbc coverage, although i saw on another website that you can get the bbc online streaming view if you fake out the ip, that bbc has really extensive streaming of all the events and in hd quality or something like that. that's all pretty better than nbc. the way ctv and nbc and even some of the chinese networks (weird cause we're getting some of the chinese coverege here in our market. the only thing is that there are no italian or latino stations broadcasting anything from or about winter olympics, although there are spanish, and italians representing in the winter oly's) do it is talk down to the viewers because they assume we're stupid and don't understand the sport/event or we don't know anything about the athletes. which is probably true for the typical canadian (especially if it's not hockey), american, chinese, but some of us have been following the career of many of these athletes for years. i'm enjoying the olympics because i get to see a large amount of fresh meat on the canadian team compete with the entire world field, which is interesting because some of them only compete locally or nationally and haven't made the jump to world cup tour yet. anyways i'm excited for giant tomorrow. let's go aksel. put the hammer down!!! (the hammer in curling is one of the bestest things i've heard on tv so far)...and by tomorrow i mean this morning. i am in a complete time zone warp. thanks olympics.

i'm trying to recover from the hockey games last night, but i'm online to say here, that i saw your runs yesterday and you were really going for it, and you wanted that medal and didn't remain apathetic or anything. you took a risk because you wanted to win, and yeah there were mistakes, but it's not the end you know. you're having a great games. anyone who tries to rain on your parade is in the wrong. we're having the same thing happen to some of our athletes here, and it's not right. congrats aksel. it's been great watching all the athletes, skiers, putting it down and giving it their all. i was watching your dad cheer for you, and i was thinking, what a lucky guy. i wish my dad would do something like that for me. so you know what you're a very lucky, hardworking guy and you're blessed. enjoy the experiences you're having now in this moment, and may you enjoy many other awesome moments! good luck!

That topic is so right - it hurts sometimes, but that's the only true. We can never get everything we want. Unfortunatelly! But that way we can everytime have another wish to make true and to put all efforts to achieve it. :)))
Well, I was totally excited about your "first run" and hoping your advantage can be enough for possible mistakes in the second. I know slalom for downhillers can be tough - too many gates :))). And when I've heard, Ante will do the track I knew he will spicy it and use all stakes he can use according to the rules. But...I also knew, you will do your best even in technical discipline to achieve another excellent result. And it would be, if... At first I didn't realised what went wrong, then slow mo explained everything.

OK, next time. That still makes you the best athlete faaaaaaaar around!!!!!

But if had to be so, I was happy for Bode to finally got his gold, really happy! Dissapointed because of our guys, but what can I do? The girls have to save our glory - thanks to Petra and Tina.;)

watching today, I thought for sure you were going to win the Gold again. But like you said, win some, lose some. Here's hoping for another Gold in your next race !!!

I'm the fan, but I had my whole family cheering you on this morning. Sunday Morning is usually reserved for pajamas, but I put jeans on for you and everything ;) Even though you straddled (which cannot feel good,) you still gave us a thrill and I am an even bigger fan than I was yesterday. You have me so very close to grabbing a pair of skis to attempt my own version of the Super Combined - Snow Plowing and Wipeout.

22. Feb 05:38 - jo from toronto said:
I only started watching skiing since seeing you win the silver in the downhill...and now I'm hooked!!! Sorry about the outcome today but you did your best and went for it so no regret there I'm sure!

Best of luck for the remaining events to come-and no matter the outcome you'll still be the most magnetic athelete in these olympic games-just a pleasure to watch such a postive talent who is still so humble, apreciatative, and gracious in life!!!

Thanks for being so real:)

I enjoy really watching you ski. I am an American but I am half Norweigan and I am rooting for you in all the races. I'm sure you'll get amother gold.

Gold is still in your future. You're a great skiier even if you didn't win any medals. You're the best and you have a fan in Texas! Good luck in upcoming events but you won't need it....you'll need to make room for more GOLD!! :)

I was getting so used to seeing you and Bode on the podium together--and am sorry it didn't work out for you this race. I couldn't be happier, though for Bode. I doubt he'll stick around for another 4 years, and we're all hoping you will. And of course, there are still 2 more to go . . . .
God Bless and Ski Safe

In every Olympics there is someone who catches peoples imagination, for me in this Olympics that is you. You have been a great competitor, humble, gracious in victory and defeat and you seem to be enjoying yourself in all the races.

I look forward to see what Axl will be up to next!!

Darn! Sorry you didn't get a medal (but happy for Bode). That's why you're one of the classiest athletes and person around. I didn't really follow skiing until I saw your little interview spot and your story with your father. What's there not to like about an Olympic champion who's still humble, aggressive, sociable, and positive? I hope you stay til the closing ceremonies. Hey....if you get a chance, stop by and wish Patrik a speedy recovery. Nothing cheers me up more than helping a brutha out, especially one who would give anything just to ski today. You're a hero and inspiration. We love you still! You've made Norway proud!

I love how positive you are inspite of the outcome... good for you. No whining, no excuses... that's very admirable- probably part of why you have so many fans. Good luck to you for the rest of the games! Go get em!

nothing improves the humour better than doing some different thing for a while, like I don't know, taking some pics or something, maybe some gummibarchens-dear-friends (watch out so there's no logo of the producer visible) or some bling-bling new necklaces...you name it LOL

watching curling is quite an abstract thing to do too, I highly recommed it, I am just watching it in between doing things, and it definitely improves my humour, so I think it can be good for everyone to watch. Man, the guys are throwing some stones on the ice, towards some circle, named "home" and they sweep the ice (!) and bunch of people come to see it! Oh, and btw, there is a special place in the world when those stones are produced, so they are super sweet for the game! it is lovely!!!

yeah, and dissapointments come and go, that's life, all will be good!

Hei, Aksel!

It's good to see that you were able to make a come back after your devastating fall. I was actually happy to see that you won the gold, and I'm an American! My niece Allison Baver is competing at this years winter games for the US Women's Speed Skating team. Last year Allison broke her leg while skating in Bulgaria. She raced yesterday & some people think she held back from doing what she needed to do. Your story is an inspiration & one that I can't wait to share with her before her next competitions in Vancouver.

22. Feb 00:43 - Frank Eivind Rundholt said:
Du gjorde en veldig godt utfor og lå jo bra an før de siste porten. Synd at du hekta, men sånn skjer jo av og til. Uansett har du gjort det veldig bra i OL. Gøy å se på.

Selvom du kjørrte ut i dag så gjorde du en fantastisk bra innsats:)
Å lede etter utforkjøringen , og med ett gull å ett sølv i lomma så kan du uten å ta flere medaljer dra fra Canada med HEVET hode;:) Stå på .)

Of course easy to say when you sit on your sofa and are not at a race yourself, but can't help saying it : perhaps it might work out if you think less about "I want to get after the gold" and more about something like "I simply want to show the best I can do". The difference is delicate but still exists. Oh, Aksel, don't get that influenced by the game of ambitions - it's not like you. And the most sincere wishes of energy and concentration for the future races!
