Women's DH and Norway's first Gold

Posted on 18. February 2010 00:08 - 78 comments

Some Super-G training today, cause that’s gonna be the next event. Not combined like we all thought, but they’re gonna run the Super-G on Friday and then the Combined on Sunday. That means the Giant-Slalom is pushed to Tuesday. I only think from day to day what's happening. So I know right now its all about Super-G. The big favorite Lindsey Vonn won the women’s downhill ahead of my big favorite Julia Mancuso. Nice Julia!! Also very happy to see Marit Bjørgen take the today. I told you after her bronze, in my eyes the best cross-country skier on the women's tour.

Even I watched biathlon yesterday (which I normally don't do) - it was a good race I think! All the best for today's race - I'll be watching (good thing 'bout Austria, there is no alternative to skiing races in national TV no matter what else could be on...)!

An amazing day!!!! Norwegians are fond of Olympic Gold medals, no doubt about that!

Congrats to all participants today! Special congrats to Anja; amazing how she came back today, she rocks!!!, and to Mona Löseth. Great job!!! Number 13 in her first Olympics, and she's only 18!!!! Awesome!

Attacking Vikings: Best of luck for tomorrow, have a great time! You're gonna be great!

@Tony ....Petra is doing quite well , but still in hospital. With her injury she can not travel by plane, so she is staying in Vancouver for a while, than she will go back home. but the season is over for her :(

for today's women race ; congrats to Riesch & Mancuso, she did a nice job again..
still... Vonn could get a medal if not makin' a mistake :(

@ Aksel (+ other norwegians) : All the best tomorrow , and ''drive safely'' :)))
you should know that for us, you are the best, with medal or whitout it :)))

Hey guys! Oh man, some posts here are getting longer and longer, it takes a little more time to get through but still It's nice to read them, interesting topics even more juicy opinions... hehe :)
@T.: Slovenian too...hehe, nice to hear that :) as I notice from few others (unfortunately not from yours :)) nicknames we're not the only one :) btw Marusa Ferk as well as Petra got injured on training just before slalom start, girls really don't have not even a bit of luck on this games.

@A.: thanks for outfits link, I admit... these pants form norwegian curling team really make me laugh! :) :) It would be interesting to ask them about their pants :) I like this "outfits" topic, hehe... maybe they should make one more discipline... named "the most funny outfits" :) and the best thing about this, there wouldn't be any falls and crazy injuries, which sounds great! Btw if you want to see funny pic with toes, look at the picture in gallery spring/sumer2010! Three Vikings jumping into pool...*hehe* take a look at Lars's toes, pretty funny, the biger ones are funny curved :) but it would be still nice to get another pic... :)

@angyal: hehe... they say on stupid qouestion you get stupid answer... :)

@Aksel: best wishes for tomorrow! You're great, just keep on going on, race safely Superman! :)

At the end I noticed that also may post is not so short, hehe, sorry! :) see ya!

Yay! Gold for Maria Riesch. That was my wish for today. And my wish for tomorrow would be Aksel winning gold.

I just watched a vid about Sven Kramer, who won then 5000m speed skating race. An American reporter wanted to interview him right after he won and her questions were "Who are you?" " Where are you from?" And "What did you just win?"
His answer: Are you stupid???
And then they wonder where all the prejudices about Americans come from.

@Tony: I completely agree with you, it was very risky. Too risky maybe. However, the problem is that between qualifications and quarterfinals she went to the doctor and the diagnosis was that nothing is broken and no inner injures. But only later it turned out what a big mistake the doctors made.

@ Snowflake: I have reached my limit for posting today, but what you said about Petra Majdic is worth a comment. Her crash was terrible, and I agree that the organizers should protect the athletes better in that case. However, I`m surprised that she started the race with 4 broken ribs and injured lungs! Is that acceptable in the Olympics? Sorry, but I can hardly give her credit for starting that race. Considering that she collapsed in the finishing area, I`m scared about how the athletes are pushing themselves. Bronze medal is incredible, but unfortunately she had to pay the prize. Hopefully, she will be fine, and I wish her all the best!

18. Feb 19:33 - snowflake said:
It is totally irrelevant what anyone of us think about Julia ... I actually don't know what is not to like about her, I think she is cool. Of course everyone has a right to feel different but commenting that in Aksel's blog is really not nice.

Anyway, the cross country topic is something I have to comment myself ... Marit was competing great yesterday and clearly she was the best in the givien situation. But talking about her victory without realizing that she won mostly cause of Petra Majdic's horrible crash is not completely fair in my opinion. Marit is one of the best women in that sport, clearly. But definitely not in this season's sprint. I guess world cup standings say enough. Considering Petra Majdic got 3rd (only 1,8 sec behind) with 4 broken ribbons and a big injury in her lungs everyone should know what that means and who would be clearly the best if organizers would know how to protect the girls. Even other girls who were competing yesterday gave Petra a credit that she would deserve to win.

I'm actually incredible happy for Marit, I really like her. But yesterday race was only one big fiasco and I wish Marit's first olympic gold happened in different situation.

18. Feb 19:30 - Muckl said:
@T: sorry, that was not clear, I meant >the ski nation per se< You know, we have great athletes beside the skiers (Linger brothers won gold again) but the media dont pay attention on them or not that much, only comment the bad season the alpines had. It was not the best but they force the athletes to win especially the mens DH but generational change (few years ago Switzerland had the same problem and now they are back) makes the whole situation exciting. It was funny to watch the races of Kjus and Maier; 50:50 but quite boring.

18. Feb 18:36 - T. said:
@Muckl: with all due respect (and I am not coming from Austria) the results speak for themselves: you can just not say that Austrains are not a skiing nation. As for men's results they have leading athletes in 4 out of 5 disciplines and in average 3 athletes among top 10. So tell me how would you describe them? I only agree with you that they are suffering the generational change. Wait a few more years and they'll be back. Anyway my heart beats for the Norge team =)
Going to watch ladies KB now and will let myself be surprised.....

by the way, I would love to see the singers from Åare again...
And finally: I'll keep my fingers crossed - for sure!

18. Feb 18:06 - Muckl said:

Well, the commentators here still believe that Austria is a ski nation. Don?t agree with that. At the moment they -suffer- from generational change (except Slalom)

I understand there are some girls who are not fond of Julia, but she is one of the best skiers in the world, dressed or undressed!
Though, there was'nt any Norwegian girls in the slopes so the race was quite easy..! ;) There must be mentioned that Aksel and Julia dated, and now hopefully are great friends! (of course, if they start dating again or she is mean, I will throw her to the dogs, but until then she is an outstanding skier. Sometimes being a bitch is all a woman has to hang on to! x)

Lykke til videre med rennene Aksel! Du trenger bare ta et gull, så holder det med medalje i de fire andre..?

18. Feb 14:41 - A. said:
of course, by "flaws" I do not mean things concerning the safety of athletes. lack of safety or dangerous courses are unexcusable, no matter who organises the Olympics. I am thinking only about harmless flaws like f***g torch malfunction;-) , which can be acceptable.

bye!

18. Feb 14:40 - A. said:
One last thing before I dissapear for some time: yes, I read the pages when they name what went wrong during the Olympics so far (beginning with, as someone called it hilariously" fu*&#g torch malfunction"). I really feel bad for those Canadians, a lot of things really look great and obviously thery were so happy to organise the games and there's so much work put in it, so I hope it will all be ok from now!

and I really got mad when some journalists praised Bejing organisation, it was just inappropriate. I'd better watch the Olympics with some organisational flaws in free country, than "perfect ones" in a totalitarian one. (which I did not, as with all my passion for sports I boycotted that ones)

And about the public, as someone mentioned, indeed it looks great on TV, much better than in Torino in my opinion. People are at every race, everyone is cheering, it seems like everyone has a lot of fun and is very supportive (besides, of course, all those 8000 people who got their tickets cancelled in Cypress Hill LOL)

*that was my attempt to change the topic, you see;-) cheers, and have fun!

Ok, i'll tell you have i saw women dh and women ski cross country yesterday...
There was some ups and downs at the races (literally and non-literally)
First of all, for me the big winner of ski cross country is Petra Majdic. What happened to her is still unbelivable... But what she did after that, is more than unbelivable, it's really beyond all the boundries you can imagine.
And... what was happenig on dh race, was a dissaster... How come, that the organizers were more thinking about the crowd to have a huge show than the racers. It's unfair to all girls they went through that hell only because of people who actually have never seen someone on the skies before and probably don't even know the difference between dh and slalom.
But ofcourse there is some positive thought about yesterday... at least noone has died... and that's something, right?

18. Feb 14:28 - anna said:
i have to say what petra majdic did yesterday after that crash is just AMAZING!

haha i thought i was the only one but i also don't like julia mancuso. i find her quite annoying. but to each his own...

18. Feb 14:26 - A. said:
@Mimia: interesting thing about the commentators. I try to watch the games in different tv's and it's usually always the same. They do not know a lot, or are not focused, mix the previous results of the athletes (even though they can see them on their screens, have special access to databases!) I do not know what it is all about. Probably it's the sign of the time. With internet, athlete's blogs, it's easier for everyone to know the details and behind the scenes. The role of the commentator is to say somthing that we do not know, and make it interesting, even get exicted about the results. Nowadays it happens rarely, they do not usually say anything new, as if they did not yet learn how to change their approach and adopt to this reality.

@Longstockings: sorry, mate, I spoke the code, I meant that the original character of Pippi Longstockings is Swedish, not you;-) Did not think about the national cofusion here;-), sorry if it sounded confusing. But we have to admit, Sweden has some great things on their side, like Nude-We-All-Know-Who ;-)

About the discussions about people: we never know everything, and it applies to everyone, so I think the best approach is to have some distance, no matter if we like or dislike someone. Impressions are one thing, reality is another, it can get very unfair. I do not think it's a place to have discussion like that, respecting everyone;s opinion of course.

about likes and dislikes, it seems like the only neutral topic is the trivial topic of the outfits LOL

... coming out now.
Servus Longstockings. *Nice* to read your comments again! Aksel will be positively surprised, if he is awake! That's what he needed again... I'm sure! ;p) I would have bet a million dollar (sounds nicer than euro or nok or... haha!) and bets ran high, that you will come back today, after...

Yesterday, there was the day of the power women, oh yes! The DH Oueen got the gold and the self-coronated little *nice* gogo princess (Ami pure unadulterated kitsch... oh my god how vain, how sophomoric and pompous, don't better make more words about that strange and for a mid european woman elusive manner! just lol) got the Silver medal. Well, that'll be profitable for *Jewels* lingerie sale. But as a matter of fact, her run was awesome, I enjoyed it (just the run of course...) and A. is right, I also perceived a ludic kind of skiing, Julia obviously had a lot of fun. ;p)

Aksel have a look at that skiing manner (just of that, please! ;p)), then no one and nothing can stop you!

@Switzerland You are right somehow. ;p) But there's a manner, that can't be taken seriously, you just can laugh and joke about it! That's a normal human reaction, if you feel awkward...

Not sure, but it seemed to me, that most of the girls were a bit overchallanged with the DH course. I could enjoy only two silver and gold runs, most of the others were not lovely, just *not nice!!!* (with three bangs) to see these bad falls! That turned me off! ;p(

But it was *very nice* to see the first norwegian athlete, of course a woman, yes ;p), who grabbed the gold medal. She's really the cross-country queen.

SG on Friday!?! Aha, are you sure? Looking forward to see your ludic, ralaxed run Mr. Svindal! You are able to do so with such a shining, creative mindset - well, next to 'Zen'. It is Zen! Awareness of the moment. I'm astonished, weirded out, indeed! That's why I enjoy the blog, 'cause you (and sometimes others) stun me from time to time. :p))

huh, yesterday was really strange and tough day for us (Slovenian people) - our thoughts were all the time concentrated in good spirit for our biggest favourite of the yesterday events - Petra Majdic. Then shock - crazy fall down in a hole (I still can't understand, how this could be se "opened", unsecured, people from the organizer should be aware that this could happen - even to the best). We almost lost all our hope for a good place, although we all knew she could win gold. And then she surprised everyone, I believe herself also, with unnatural forces and power she was given, desperately wish to achieve the result of her carreer. Craying in pain in all levels of the race, she succeded and won the bronze - but it shines like "gold with diamonds" - as she said at the end totally exhausted. Believe it or not, we all cried with her at the end....

...yes, it was very emotional!!!

And before that women DH - well, don't know what to say - like grotesc comedy. At my opinion too much DNFs and falls at the last slope. It was something for spectators, but not good for competitors. But, as they say: Show must go on, right? And everything for the show.

Anyway, congratulations for Marit, Justyna, Lindsay and Julia.

I'm so so so happy for you, and proud of you, and watching the race was worse than watching the Finland-Sweden Olympic Final four years ago, so I'm really not certain if my manicure can take the rest of the races. And it's all your fault. But I'm really happy for you, well done!

@A.: I'd just like to point out, that as much as I, shall we say, enjoy the idea of a certain young Swede naked, I'm not from Sweden, and to be quite honest, I take immense pleasure out of ridiculing the entire nation in questions. Especially when it comes to hockey. Just to point that out. :)

First of all:
Congratulations Aksel. And: Yay for Bjørgen (and Northug of course, very sad for Pettersen though, I'm sure he could have won a medal- bronze that is, but so Northug took it, at least it is Norway as well)

In general I think it's kind of sad that there seem to be quite some things going wrong the last days, like not just in speed skating, but in biathlon, cross country, the whole ticket-returning thing, that thing during the opening ceremony, etc
I think it's quite sad since the Canadians seem to be awesome as spectators, at least that's what comes across on TV, very enthusiastic and very fair. So it's sad all those things going wrong leave something of a bad impression.

Plus: I don't remember who it was but someone mentioned the German broadcasting and I have to say that I think it's downright horrible. It's just really bad and the commentators are even worse. I feel they have no clue what they're talking about and they seem to have problems watching what's going on and commenting at the same time. Maybe there should be more female commentators ;)
But I also think that the "international broadcasting thingy", like I don't know how it's calles, but what I mean are the pictures that are being provided by the official broadcasting whatever, doesn't really do a good job. It would be appropriate for a world cup but these are the Olympics.

@MaryS:yeah, that dh hill today was a bit crazy! too crazy maybe.
I think it's a very cool podium, skiing wise. Lindsey is in her own world and it's awesome to see her skiing, the runs are always so precise but at the same time breath-taking, extraordinarily consistent, perfect combination rarely seen. And to be able to stand all this pressure, amazing. All due respect to the skiing guys, there's no such dominant one male skier in the world cup now. Julia, on the other hand, has a style that reminds me a bit of Bode's style of skiing, in all positive ways: a bit crazy, a bit more "free" I'd say, not always giving top results (this unlike Bode, with all his dnf's he won tons of races and 2 overalls), but she always looks like she enjoys it. I personally like the podium, as you can see that there's a place for all approaches out there on top. But I see, I am not the only one;-)

@Muckl: I replied you under the previous entry;-)

watching speed skating now, there is a golden Japanese outfits. BTW have you heard that the ice-machines broke down a day or two ago and they plan to transport the zamboni from Calgary as a support. Funny! I also saw an interview with Johan Olaf Koss. Classy as ever. I do not need more;-)

Congratulations on your silver medal!
As for the medal around Marit but I disagree. The biggest favorite for the sprint was our runner Petra Majdi?, but due to the negligence of the organizers of the training before the match seriously damaged. He flew in from the line in the unsecured shaft! In terrible pain then compete in eliminating race, quarter-finals, the semi-finals and happily sleeps in the finale. But here is a superhuman effort to win the bronze medal. Marit was the fastest time, Petra is optional for the medal. Ask Marit, if not? The women's downhill would not be lost of words ... I wonder if girls are competitors or women gladiators, ready to drive each so crazy and abnormal route, even at the cost of life? .... If this is too lose its sense of skiing, purpose.
I wish you a lot of fortune and of courage on contests, healthy finish that games!!!

Im glade that we all have our own eyes. And my eyes see Petra Majdi?. After that crash and all the pain... She is really the bigest!!! Of course Marit Bjørgen and Justyna are good to (just a little less than Petra). :))))) My modest view. :)
Of course, congratulations to all medal winners!
And this is the charm of sports, we all have our own favorite!

Aksel, you're right - Marit is the best cross country skier, but I hope, that Justyna (she has the same name like me) will be the Olympic champion in the next race. ;)

Have a nice day and enjoy the free time! :*

GULL til NORGE ja! Marit did a great run. She's a tough woman! :))

Too many falls today! I grudged Anja to get a medal so much.

Missfortune for the cross-country norwegian guys. One has fallen (my fav oh no), the others were beaten by two russians, who obviously had better *vitamins* or other good things for breakfast...;)

For the starting carrier of the curling team here...

For that matter: The curling competitions had an unbelievable high rating at the OL 2006; about 1 Million watched rhe ladys final I've read.

Aksel is lost... in the new powder!?! ;) There must have been great conditions today. Weather looked brilliant.:)
