That's it, Vancouver 2010

Posted on 01. March 2010 09:36 - 122 comments

After the closing ceremony last night the flame is out and it’s all over. It’s been great! Not just doing well in races, but the whole experience. The atmosphere at Olympics are special. And when you add the fact that Canadians are very friendly and they live in a beautiful country it gets perfect. Right now I actually regret travelling back to Norway before the closing ceremony. Knowing how great the opening was and looking at the pictures, I really wish I had been a part of it. Maybe I even could have gotten tickets for the hockey final. What a game, and with the best player in the world scoring the final goal in overtime. Like it was written, produced and directed in Hollywood. Thanks again to all of you that have followed me during the Olympics. All your support and your comments on this blog and Twitter etc. Thanks again, and hope you enjoyed sharing my Olympic experience.

I know I'm a little late, but I wanted to just say that I really enjoyed all of the alpine skiing; especially you and Bode Miller at the Olympics!! Congrats on your three medals!! That was really impressive and when I wasn't cheering for the US (the men) I was cheering for you and Norway!!

I don't really know anything about winter sports; I live in Louisiana and we hardly even have a winter. Snow and ice here means we get the day off! I found myself drawn to these games and I watched them from start to finish. Watching you and Bode made me want to learn to ski, ya'll made it look so like such fun!

I heard someone call you a 'gentle gaint' and I wanted to say that I believe that you seem to be a genuinely nice person and it's very nice to see nice people finish first for a change!

Aksel thanks for sharing your skills and enjoyment of skiing with the world. Good luck in the future.

I am glad you enjoyed your time in Canada and I am very impressed with your hockey knowledge. You know about Crosby and it was like a script from Hollywood to score the overtime winner. I had no idea who you were before the Olympics. But, I am glad that I do know. You are an amazing skier and super hot! Good luck in Kvitfjell, this weekend.

@Teekanne: thank you, it's nice to hear you like my comments, you -if I can compliment you too-have a very nice name;-) My alter ego here is all I can stand, as I do not particularly love the anonimity of the internet (although what I write I am not ashamed of and would tell you the same if we met in real life;-), and I also do not specially have too much of free time, so I never really thought of my own blog, I'd rather use this place for comments, as I am -so far so good -allowed to;-)

@Pipi: those were only questions, not a questionnaire, if you ask me, and yes, there is a difference! I do not do questionaires. You have to ask someone else if you want to get one;-)

@Gilly: funny info about your friend! ;-)

Aksel, I have a small question. When events like the Olympics, or smaller, the world championships end, you're nostalgic for the atmosphere, you feel the lack of the right pressure (feeling / stress) that pushes you to the performance? Or do you enjoy the quiet of your home, you need a little time to unwind, then come back for more?

Again, congratulations, not only for your three Olympic medals, but for everything you've accomplished so far. I hope many beautiful years of competition available to you.
Hope you understand, because it is a google translation.

@A: did you ever think about doing an own blog? I really like to read your comments and questions.

when you see all the stuff they have to carry, i´m interested in how long it takes to get all your stuff at the baggage claim... 2 hours? 3 hours?
never complain about a woman who takes about 20 cases.

I am still intimidated by the love-comments by new fans, it must be a very nice warm feeling to have so many fans, although, of course, it is very important to stay down to earth and not go bananas as the world goes on.

That is why, I have an important, trivial, totally not hype questions (do not count to get the answers, it's just to express my curiosity, if I have to be honest with you all)

1) What do you do with the medals in the security control at the airport? in case I ever win some (in like 20 years in masters series of curling world cup or something) or travel with someone who won them, it would be good to know

2) how are all the skis travelling?

3) has the number of countries following the blog increased rapidly cause of the games?

4) if, where and when can we see the "Clash of the Clothes", Curling Team in Clown Pants meeting Skiing Team in Their Uniforms That Soaked All the Colours From The Universe? There should be totally a meeting or a friendly cupcakes-eating-for-record event of both of the teams, eg. with some charity auction of the clothes or something. That could be fun. just sayin'

bye!

Honestly speaking, It's my first time to watch the winter OL games and I have never been that hooked watching Skiing. It's all started out when my boss ask me what country I am cheering for "Canada or Norway"...I just answered politely I go for Norway in Skiing competition; and she said... Good choice because as far as I know Norwegians are good at skiing and I just nodded back in reply. My loyalty resides not because Norwegians are best known to be born with skis on their feet but because of their Passion and dedication with this sport.. This is not only a sport for them to compete or gain recognition of, but a game where they can enjoy and have fun, meet new friends and share experiences and techniques...No matter how rough the weather is,and if the slopes are in good conditions, you can see this norwegian skiers tirelessly up and down the slopes. from sun up to sundown you would see still see them on those chilly slopes.,All smiles( I just wondered if they feel aches at all). and winning awards are just the price of their love to this game...
Congratulations Aksel and your fellow Norwegian athletes! for the excellent performances you've done in Vancouver OL and may the force be with you in all your endeavors :)

Hi Axel,

My name is Saida and I AM CANADIAN. I have been a fan of men's downhill skiing for as far back as I can remember and watching you race was FUN. When you finished the Super G, you wagged your tongue into the camera; and I said to myself..."ok this guy is cool, adventurous and light spirited, who is he, I am going to follow him? When I saw your blog posting that you left the Olympics early......for tacos and brotherly love (how sweet!), I said..."A shame, he is going to miss out on the collective experience that becomes powerfully electrifying towards the end, he is going to wish he stayed to the end especially because of the hockey". My female intuition told me that the Team Canada was going for hockey gold. There is a unique power that errupts in a collective experience and it would of been great for you to feel this power in a country where the most passionate sport cheered by fans is hockey.

Canada is an array of different cultures, religions and colors and often people tend to first describe themselves by their parents ethnic background. Canada is very unique in this way. But when Team Canada won, every Canadian in the arena and outside became one, part of a collective with only one identity. I watched my brother and sister react with a sense of pride and honor; not because a gold medal was won or that the Americans lost, but because their Canadianism was exposed and elevated. It is quite unique to witness the magnitude of this as Hockey is a Canadian game and the Olympics were in Canada. You could feel and see this across the country and I can only imagine how powerful it was in Vancouver. I don't know but maybe this emotional partriotic and nationalism occurs in every country but like you said Canadians are very friendly but also very down to earth...just like Crosby (the greatest player). Canadians don't linger over hockey loses or keep grudges, they just embrace the opportuntiy to celebrate a win with honor respect and kindness towards everyone. I am sure you will be at the Soshi Olympics and I hope you get to experience this powerful collective experience, it is unique. But my intuition says Canada is going to win again! he he he. All the best and good luck with all your races. You seem to be very appreciate and proud of your Olympic accomplishments even with earning a silver and bronze. Admirable!

I hope you had a chance to see the Slalom on Saturday. It was entertaining to follow TOLE (Albania), von HOHENLOHE (Mexico) and the famous SNOW LEOPARD (Ghana)...the spectators loved them and they showed great humility. Nice to see the competitors so friendly and nice to each other. I love seeing the true human spirit in competition.

oh yes so sad its all over...i do agree with you-you should have stayed for the closing ceremony especially since you enjoyed such success. But I also understand why you went home early...as you said in a previous entry, need some alone time soak it all in!!! Another aspect that makes you so unique most would bask in the glory for as long as possible in the public eye, but you like to feel it all on your own, I really respect that:)

Also-it would have been incredible to see that hockey game...history was made last night and it was incredible for all Canadians!!!!! I have to disgree with you though..it definitely wasnt written in hollywood cause then we would have lost for sure..it was wriiten in some other higher level...at least thats where ever good guys finish first:)

Best of luck on future competitions:)

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts and memories. You have a fan in Texas!! :)

thank you aksel for giving of yourself and coming to these olympics and absolutely rocking it. canada loves you (lot of little shredding kids look up to you)! yesterday was such a special day. i mean the entire olympics, 2 weeks of absolute gravy for anyone who likes sports, especially winter sports and have watched them progress quadrennialy. i love the olympics. i know a lot of athletes didn't come because they had other comps, or were injured, or didn't want to but that's okay because we had the creme of the crop come to vancouver, whistler, richmond, and give their best to their sports in great and crappy weather. i loved van2010. THANK YOU!!!

congrats to petter (hahah he's so lucky to have had his awards ceremony with everyone there). congrats to marit. congrats to team norwary all around because i saw some great things from norwegian athletes, even from the youngsters on the team who have amazing potential and bright futures.

that hockey game was so epic. we went bonkers here, partying, shouting, street parading. it was amazing. we're so proud of our boys and our girls. insta classic and everything for all the 25 and unders because we weren't alive for the other historical hockey games. and all the haters who always hate on sidney crosby and jerome iginla (they talk about iggy not winning anything), who are the rest of the guys who supposedly can't win (luongo, big joe thorton, etc...) can all suck it, especially the media folks (the gossipers. not the ones who actually know what they're talking about and do a good job). ryan miller has been the best goalie in the nhl for 2 years straight. we love him on the east coast (except when he's playing the leafs, aka the laughs of course). ryan kessler had a great games. same with parise. usa should hold their head and be proud. we have th emost gold medals, but they won the standings. they have better programs and more athletes. good for them. it's nice that this time canada got to shine too and people go to see what the country and canadians had to offer.

oh and i remember posting on here in another thread about how team norway (hockey team) played great hockey. those guys are getting better too. one day all the countries in the world will be on an equal playing field, despite all the physical challenges, and i can't wait for that day when all the gaps are closed and we're just enjoying competition and sports.

thank you olympics. looking forward to london and sochi. let's go!

The reason why I ask is because my studies allow me to travel a lot. But whenever I come home, usually after weeks/month of travelling or terms abroad, there's always the feeling of some kind of "emptiness" that makes me going abroad again and again. So ehm, not sure what you think about it....enjoy your time at home, though...greeez

This is a great website and thank you for blogging. One humble suggestion - you need a map of the world, with pins for each of the cities where you have fans and friends - i bet the map would be really interesting just based on all the places you get comments from!

Aksel,

I just a few days ago read your website--very nice. I have been a fan of your skiing (last 4-5 years), and always could tell you were a really good guy. Your website reveals your positve character, just like a suspected. It is always fun to cheer for an athlete whom you can respect both on and off the field of play:) I guess I havev been a fan of Lasse's as well--before you:)

I saw you ski at Whistler--in the Super Coombined. Bummer about the slalom run, but still exciting. I was the American Norwegian (I'm sure one of many) ecstatic to get your autograph and a picture. Thanks Aksel, and God Bless you in all your endeavors:)

Best of all, we get to know Axl...Thanks much for sharing yourself/ perspective in this blog with us. We've seen you in actions on the hills, but your candidness, your humor... so precious from the heart of a true champion!
Hey, take good care of yourself and best for the remaining season.

Aloha Aksel! Takk to YOU for such a great Olympics and all the inspiration! You gave us something to believe in again. Don't worry...I'm sure you'll be at Sochi 2014 and you can enjoy all the ceremonies there again. And we'll remind Level and Acer to score you great tickets for the Gold Medal hockey match. I have a feeling we'll meet the Canadians there again. And I'm sure you'll get great seats then too!
Congrats to Team Canada...and well done this Olympics and for hosting. Team USA, hats off to you...you made us proud!
Aksel, Norway ranked 4th overall in medal standings! Isn't that great? Small country, big performances--particularly Northug in the 50km finishing it off with a gold medal! Superb!
Thanks again for all the news and blogs throughout the past 2 weeks and sharing them with us....you have a new life-long fan here in the US. Looking forward to your next event...Fast skis and Best of luck in the World Cup!

@ Dad Svindal
you must be a great man. Aksel said in an interview that you had done after the death of his mother everything for him. It must have been so difficult for you to suddenly be alone with two children. I know that from my father, he has also reared alone my brother and me. And yes, he has done also everything for us. But it must be incredibly difficult when the mother of the children is missing! I think your two sons will be forever grateful to you! I'm very grateful to my Dad, he will always be my big hero :-)
Excuse me, i did not want to be too personal! But because i know the situation from myself, it concerns me and i wanted to just say that i have great respect for you!!!

All the best for you!

@Aksel
Nice you're back in europe! I hope the jetlag does not bother you too long!

Me too. Watched the Olympics all alone on my computer, no snow alive at all, just the virtual one I can watch on the screen :)))
And now back to our dissertations, in solitude, but with excellent motivation :)))

on your sidenote "Just from the brief show Russia put on I can tell that their opening ceremony is going to be really impressive visually and technically".
I think, the most important thing is not the ceremony, but to get the right weather. Man, what were our guys thinking about when they decided to choose a subtropical town for it ? though having petroleum we don't have that indoor skiing as in Dubai...

It was such a thrill and pleasure to watch you compete! The NBC piece on your crash and comeback was so inspirational, and I loved watching your Dad so excited to see you win gold. Your infectious personality and friendly nature was refreshing to see, and I have to say you are beautiful inside and out. I can't wait to read more of your blog posts, and I will definitely be watching your races in the future. From Cricket in Cape Cod USA!

You and all the other great athletes gave us a wonderful Olympic moment! Thank you Aksel! : ) And.... now a little literary inspiration about your sport from New York ...This is from a poet John Patterson--- Maybe you can relate... ; )
"Leaning on my ski poles,
The wind lashes at my face.
Through watery eyes I glance down
At he receding white mass below.
Sparkling silver dust skitters in the sun.
Tired evergreens bow to their heavenly burden.
A floating mantle of white
Funnels toward azure peaks, far off.
A world of peace, unstained and sinless
Cloaked in thin, clean, innocent air.
Sliding one foot forward I slip down descending,
Forcing my weight into each turn.
My peaceful vision turns about
As the reality of the biting wind
Cuts sharper at my face -
Fear blowing uphill
As I swoop down,
Faster, faster.
The air no longer naive, now
Sucks away at my breath like a theiving cat,
Leaving my chest empty, my head
Halfway up the slope,
And I'm suddenly stopped.
Halted at the door of the lodge.
Gasping.
The death stroke of panic subsides,
Is over quicker than I thought.
And I look back up at the giant trail of fear,
A mountain glorious,
Which had just unknowingly released me."

and keyword closing ceremony...in germany we have a phrase: no matter what you do it's the wrong thing :-D

with the hockey-game i disagree. if it was written, produced and directed in hollywood the us-team would have been the winner of gold-medal *lol*
but i was highly pleased with the result too.

Congrats on all of your accomplishments, especially at the Olympics. I believe you have life-long fans in my household! My son, age 7, is fascinated with all things medical, and thinks you must be a superhero to overcome your injuries in Beaver Creek and go on to win Olympic medals. My daughter, age 4 and a beginner skier, excitedly screamed at you through the TV to GO FASTER every time she saw you, lol. We wish you health, luck and prosperity, and are anxious to follow your career achievements. Thank you for being an inspiration and a positive role model to my children, as well as so many other children. Best of luck to you, from your American friends!

?Like it was written, produced and directed in Hollywood ??Wish I could share that enthusiasm about the hockey game...

If that game was a movie I?d nominate it for a Razzie award from the way it ended. But I am still SO proud of Team USA, what a comeback down 2-0. Parise scoring the tying goal in the last minutes of the game. Thank God I don?t have a heart condition. Poor Ryan Miller was so bummed out that he gave up the final goal. He was awesome throughout most of the tournament only allowing 5 goals.

Taking from the essence of the Canadians? I am now going to extend my congratulations to Team Canada.

Thank you Aksel for sharing your experiences with your fans.

It is like coming home from a really great vacation and then once you actually get home you?re like ?why didn?t I stay longer??

On NBC the announcers were commenting on how few athletes remained for the closing ceremonies and I remember thinking that I would stay for the entire experience. Life is so unpredictable you never know if you'll be back to experience it in another 4 years.

Sidenote: Just from the brief show Russia put on I can tell that their opening ceremony is going to be really impressive visually and technically.
