Podium again!

Posted on 07. March 2010 16:19 - 253 comments

Podium again!*Another good day in Kvitfjell with a third place. So fun to ski now when the feeling is good and the times are fast. Happy that Eric Guay won. Him and Cuche are the two guys at olympics that deserved a medal the most, without getting one. Check out the outfits me, Kjetil and Lars have been using this weekend. Its a combo of our olympic collection and the normal stuff. We've had the crazy jackets(as we've named the) all year, and now we brought our crazy pants from Whistler to complete the craziness! What do ya think? There is actually a facebook group saying these pants are cooler than the ones the norwegian curling team had in vancouver. Flying to Munchen to get to the finals in Garmisch tomorrow. Its gonna be fun! When you ski fast anything is possible.

"Them jackets" as Christiane calls them, definitely have to be used more, even outside of the slope. I am thinking - even in the official events. Is it possible that they stay for the next season? There''s so much potential in them, as all the other nice people write: the parrots, the astronauts, and just so much more!
have the nice rest of the week!

why have you removed your video from the Eyes Wide Open? Because of some copyright restrictions? Please put it back again, if you can. I enjoyed watching it from time to time, as I can't find the dvd here, we don't have a super ski store in our provincial town here :)))
Wish you forces and concentration for your races, and it doesn't matter that much if you're 1st, or 5th, or 15th (OK, for you it's important), the essential is : be safe, and get fun, and be happy !
And wish you never to get your bags lost in all that hell airports :)))

@Jules : Went to Laax (Switzerland) two years ago, before that mostly to Italy (Madonna di Campiglio). The last few years I keep going back to Alpe d?Huez (France). Fell in love with the wide range of variety of slopes & the outdoor swimming pool. Where do you usually go? I?m guessing Switzerland..? :)
I never did competitions. Maybe I would have liked to, but I did too many different sports as a teenager to get extremely good at any of them. And, like I said, if you only go one week a year, it takes a while to get a decent level..
If possible I would go ten times as much, but being a student there are more budget issues than time issues... I?m thinking of maybe following the Bloso course next year to become an instructor, then I can go for free, haha. Emigration might be a possibility too ;)

I took two years of Danish, so I'm aware of the shortcomings of the translator. It ain't great, but better than nothing for those with no knowledge of Nordic languages. Plus you get added entertainment from the occasional major mis-translation or over translation.

@Nicole - you should check out the raw video of Lars' (I think) great save on the downhill track in pre-season training. It also appears in the Portillo video, but on the raw video you can hear the radio transmissions (they were training with the Canadians at that point). The Michael Jackson movie is also one of Lars' productions - my other favorite is the ski-pong.

Not sure about the video - think I'd be laughing too hard to be able to do the 'keep fit' part :o)

The most recent article is here, and each article links back to previous article(s)
http://www.aftenposten.no/nyheter/sport/skisport/article3553366.ece

NRK also has an archive of stories on Aksel: http://www.nrk.no/nyheter/distrikt/ostfold/sport_nrk_ostfold/1.4206194

I certainly agree that the calender should be "with clothes". The USOC did a series of pre Olympic images and for many of the guys they did topless shots. Most of them ended up looking very contrived and awkward. And anyway, Aksel is so stylish, and he needs another chance to show off that suit they were given to wear for special occasions at the Olympics! :o)

@Mac, I'm not shocked that the USOC can't provide health insurance to all the athletes. For one, it's a poorly run organization - lots of money wastage and inefficiency, and also health insurance is bloody expensive. It certainly gets cheaper when it's group coverage, but I would think it's hard to find an insurer who's willing to take on the risk of athletes in sports like skiing. Insure a skier, and you're pretty much guaranteeing that you will be paying for surgery, planned or unplanned, not to mention a high chance of injuries happening abroad, either in training or competition.

I don't think the very top athletes - like Aksel of course! - will be affected much by the economy, but certainly many sponsoring companies are hurting, particularly the big banks and US auto companies. The US Speedskating Team which has some of the world's top athletes lost it's major sponsor only months before the Olympics and other sports events in sports like tennis are losing sponsors. In order to sponsor athletes, companies have to have income from somewhere, and my guess is that ski companies sponsor athletes with the hope - in part - that they will sell more skis and equipment to the rest of us. And if the rest of us don't have as much $$$ to spend on skis, ski vacations etc., they have less $$$ for sponsorship. Fortunately, my guess is that skiing will always be so big in parts of Europe, that European based companies will do OK as long as they have a good business plan.

Heck, if I were a company with sponsorship money, Aksel would be one of my top choices. Good looking, well-spoken in multiple languages, humorous, incredibly talented, hard working and a good role model. And I think the last is key, because I think we're in the midst of shift in alpine skiing 'talent generations" - and it seems that organizations are focusing in on inspiring and working with the next generation of alpine skiers.

Anyway, my stats are not going to do themselves (darn), so back to work...

I take your point about some photos looking unreal...if you used the action shots rather than staged or contrived shots then they would be better...

There must be thousands of shots that could be used...they don't necessarily have to be taken in a studio!!

LOL I don;t wanna spoil the calendar idea, but I'd personally exchange the calendar for the dancing vid of the guys. And frequent toes pic on that blog. (hiiint!) I cannot be serious here, really. Off topic is a must.

I mean, most calendars I saw of the famous athletes looked a bit weird. I mean, the photos. Like wax figures. Or in unnatural poses, totally . But that is the case of most comemercial shots, and overphotoshopping for all the ads and stuff with one fine exception of Freddie Ljungberg's Calvin Klein ad, thank you Mr Klein and the Swedish soil LOL

sooooo, we were talking about skiing right? Who do you think would win the overall? Besides Aksel (surprise), who might suddenly decide to win all the final races and be the fastest in slalom (no offence intended)) I kinda wanted Cuche to win. On the other hand that would mean that poor Benni would be second like for the onehundreth time, so I am in two minds. That means that probably Carlo will win. It will be all fun to watch, cool week on the horizon, I cannot believe the season is almost over!

I might be away, so enjoy it guys and good luck to the AttackingPaintBallVikings!

08. Mar 20:44 - Mac said:
@Kate: thanks for the info on the articles. It was interesting.
I'm wondering in having the Olympics in the middle of the WC season didn't leave much of a break for athletes as they would have in a non-Olympics year, so there's less down time to rest and recuperate. I'm not familiar with the event schedules, so I'm not sure if it's relevant.

I hadn't thought about the effects of the economy on sponsorships, but I would think that with such a strong showing in the Olympics, that would be a plus for the sponsors to highlight and they wouldn't want to miss the opportunity. I think it would be difficult for athletes who aren't in such a strong position, who are borderline on "breaking through" and that that's where the negotiations become more difficult. Slightly off-topic: I heard a report during the Olympics how the majority of the US olympic athletes don't have health care coverage provided by the USOC; it's rationed among the different sports and only the top "x" number of athletes in each discipline could receive basic coverage. Otherwise your on your own to find something.

I like the calender idea :o) I think the Austrian ski team did a calender at one point, but I think Aksel, Kjetl etc. would make much better "calender men". Any suggestions for which skier or which outfit for which month... :o) :o)

Afterposten has run a couple of articles on Aksel during Kvitfjell - for those who can't read Norweigan, Google has a decent translator. It was mentioned that Aksel was the most popular athlete amongst the Norwegian public in a poll done (I think) by Aftenposten. Very cool, but obviously no surprise that Aksel is so highly respected!

Aksel also mentions that he has been sick again (:o( :o( - please take care of yourself, as it sounds like it is probably viral and viruses can really screw with you if they hang around for a while. I know a dancer who's career was ended by a bout of mono that ended up becoming chronic. It totally zapped his energy and everytime he tried to get back into training, it would zap his energy again.).

Anyway, a 2nd and a 3rd at Kvitfjell is pretty amazing ifor someone who has been under the weather - heck it would be an amazing result for someone totally healthy!

The articles also mention that Aksel will be skiing in the NM in Narvik after the WC finals, and then doing some testing (equipment) in Central Europe afterwords. But is opting not to do the filming for the video he's been doing after previous seasons. And he will be re-negotiating equipment contracts as they expire this year. Not a bad time to be re-negotiating contracts - an Olympic gold medal and a silver and a bronze are pretty darn good negotiating tools.

@Aksel - with the contract re-negotiations, I was wondering if you've noticed or expect any effect of the poor economy on endorsement opportunities for skiers. Are companies sponsoring fewer athletes or giving out less equipment or fewer extra freebies? I know that other sports have taken a huge hit as companies cut back on the money for sponsorships, and that in recent years the US Ski Team has had to cut back on the number of athletes who are supported by team funds, but wasn't sure if there had been a similar effect in Europe...

What a beautiful day here, snow is gone and the sun is out. Aksel, hoping you had save travels and have fantastic runs this week.

Glad the Hurt Locker won, pieces of that are close to my heart. And very glad that the ex-wife won over the ex-husband.

The more I look at the outfits, the more I smile...and wonder what will top it for next season....oh, the ideas spinning in my head...or maybe it's the picture making my head spin....

@Apricot, you may certainly have February as your month to design for. Why do I think this could take off in a way never imagined... ;)

call it a Woman Day,when a girl kicks her ex's a** and gets the Oscar for best director instead of him;-) whoops her film wins too LOL just jokin' , of course, I know the essence matters not the gender of who won;-)

it's all tricky, I'd say there is no rule, as I know both incredible stupid girls and guys, as well as incredible smart girls and guys. What is bothering and destroying it all, are all those weird stereotypes, that sit in people's heads, so sometimes even the smart ones surrender and follow the stereotypes in their behaviour. Do not get me wrong, I love people in general, they are my favourites to observe and the source, equally of stories causing amazement, surprise, and wtf's;-), but finding a reasonably thinking normal person, who gets it all, nowadays is a rare and precious thing.;-)

and if you happen to look for reasonably thinking, normal, smart guy who is free from thinking that the girl is his trophy to cook the dinner and do the laundry for him, and who would be up for some challenge, it may seem it is a mission impossible.

speaking of impossible missions, I have to get back to work and prepare some incredible amount of stuff, so bye!

PS Christiane, nice to see you. Is the car ready for our roadtrip? I feel like going for a roadtrip. we could go to Czech Rep. to but the jackets and finally go to the Monaco, rolling with style! LOL

My best friend is a gay. Nevertheless, one says always gays are the best men. But I say you that is not right!!! My friend is silly, freakish, cleaning-furious, cooking-furious, more vain as every woman and is selfish! But I say you, i love him totally haha!!!! But when "man" would be too strenuous...

Yes, excellent idea - the guys should definitely rename themselves from Attacking Vikings into the Attacking Parrots ! At least for end of this season ! :)))

I really feel like I'll be happy if I can get such a jacket for when I'm working with all those grey dusty papers of the archives... Oh, I know, I'll ask my 10 year old cousin to paint a white shirt for me - and it'll be a hand made, what's more !

@Jen
Yeah, nothing's better than a good sleep! And have nice dreams about the Attacking Parrots :)))

@ Aksel
By the way, about dreams : those outfits remind me about the colourful umbrella of Ole Lukøje. Do you know? I adored that fairy-tale, and my Mom and Dad used to put my blue-and-red umbrella in the corner of the room when I went to bed. How I was scared to get my Dad's big black one, if I behaved badly during the day! :)))

A girl can dream, right? (still, you have to admit, it is all rather innocent. No sequins mentioned LOL)

In fact, I wanna see all the people I know wearing those outfits, singing and dancing, to brighten the DaysOfOurLives. That would be way too legendary for words. That's how cool I think the outfits are.

I was expecting this photo sooner or later. But I don't feel good so there won't be any cheeky or crazy comments.
I think Lenzerheide has been your best performance so far, maybe Garmisch Partenkirchen will be something to remember too. Be fast and careful.

@ all
I never used to wear ski helmet. Yesterday I experienced something very sad and hope that one unknown boy will be ok. Wear ski helmet by all means!

When I saw the outfit on TV today, I told myself that I was not going to commentate on it. But if you post a pic...
My first thought was that both pants and jackets are a tad bit too much for the eyes^^
But after seeing the new pic I finally noticed that all the pants and jackets are unique (like the olympic medals^^) so I like them even more now.

Back after a few hours of sleep... CBC decided to stop coverage on TV and online with about 15 skiers still to go = argh!. Not that the podium changed, but I'd have liked to see Scott Macartney's run as I wonder if this may be his last season by choice or by loss of funding. He's incredibly bright, so I think he'll find great success off the piste, but I agree with Saturday's commentators that he's just not been the same since his horrific crash a couple of years back (Kitzbuehl?)

Aksel, the full jacket and pants combo is quite an eyeful - I think it looks less like post-paintball and more like those psychedelic computer screen savers. Kinda like a good acid trip, only with the mind alteringness provided by the awesome skiing of those who wear the outfits!

Thrilled for Guay, though the Canadian press seems much slower to congratulate than criticize. I can only imagine the level of pressure he's been under with both a home Olympics and now having to support a wife-to-be and daughter who he probably doesn't get to see very often during the skiing season. It's good that Own the Podium funding will continue as it takes a long term commitment to succeed, but I hope they spend more time actually finding out what the athletes want rather than wasting money on things that look good on paper, but don't help in reality.

Safe travels Aksel (which I hope don't include any time in the hell otherwise known as Frankfurt Airport)

@A.: Who are you and what have you done to my friend? Since when have you been too shy to ask for some 'tunes'n'moves' from the boys? As I recall, it was you who suggested covering* the spandex with sequins and then performing the Eye of the Tiger, Tina Turner -style!

Thanks, hun.

oh, FunnyBoy! are you kidding with those outfits, there should be a warning before one sees the pic! My eyes hurt, the whole world around became grey and when I close my eyes I still see the outfits, you know, like when you stare at the sun and you close your eyes you can still "see " it.

But yes, I am happy!

Nice group pic, you all look rad. If there would ever be a band, those must stay. Great outfits for the opening number!

oh, btw, the race was again, great, congrats! Now only 50 sth points to get the globe for the super-g, but you are usually the master of the finals, so I am optimistic!

PS Stockings', hope your bad news are not totally bad, cheers my mate;-)

@Aksel: Oh, you heard of the bad news I got? 'Cause this is just you trying to make us happy again, isn't it? (Very much appreciated, thank you!) By the way, why does it look like you're having way more fun than Lars and Elfie are... As for the outfits... you know, if you squint your eyes and tilt your head to the left, it feels like you're high on acid. (Which is not to say I don't like them. After all, I only really ridicule things I like, as you must be aware by now.)

@Auntie Em: Meant to tell you this earlier. I have a t-shirt that says:

Also makes you easy to spot at the starting gate getting ready...ha!..like seeing you inserting your red bite guard.....geeze the cameras don't miss much do they?

Sorry to see Cuche miss that gate! However, I'm happy you made it into the TOP THREE!

If you ask me, the only that fits the best to the highest step is YOU, but ok, I know you are very fair and honest athlete, so I respect your opinion.:)) Well, Eric and Didier for sure didn't have very lucky days at Olympics - especially for Cuche Olympic seemed to be in conradiction to the whole season and results he achieved. And Eric finally used the chance for a gold. Good job for him.

About your outfit - that colourful jackets and pants are really fun, I think they suit to your character. Special outfit for special person! I love colours! For sure we can't miss you at the slope or in the crowd - that's fine by me.:)))

If you can, get a rest today, and tomorrow successful flight to the venue of the last act of the season. Keep your speed!;))))

Congratualtions on 3rd, even though it's not #1 your seem to be a very gracious person. That is so rare in the sporting world. I am so plesantly suprised. Usually when an athlete is so good at something they can't even acknowledge the person who won because of their big "Ego". There is nothing wrong with a little ego, and I am sure everyone wants to win, but to say that someone else deserved it is unheard of. *hugs*

Those are some wild outfits!!lol I don't know if they top the curling teams pants, but it is really, really close. Tye-dye always makes me think of the '60s......... so *peace* & *love*.

Love your true sport spirit : always glad with what you have (your 2nd and 3rd), and always happy for those who got what they deserved. Now, that's how we should all treat our life!
The point of the crazy jackets+ the crazy pants is obviously to get as much fun as possible. (Anyways, there's too much of grey colours around us! - so it's cool to be so bright, especially on the white snow!) And when you get fun, you do the things better and easier.
Aksel, be safe on all your trips and races, get fun, and continue to give us all your sunshining!

@Jen, New England, US
How about getting some crazy clothes to help ourselves writing our dissertations? Although, they are not to be put on when we'll defend them, that's for sure :)))
