Norway and Sweden. Good neighbors!

Posted on 20. February 2010 23:27 - 141 comments

There has been this ongoing smear campaign between Norway in Sweden in the media on both sides of the border. It’s mostly biathlon and cross country teams that are involved, and the media uses it for all it’s worth. I think it’s the dumbest thing ever! And here is a little note on how it works between the two nations in Alpine Skiing: I won the gold yesterday, but Patrik Järbyn from Sweden had a terrible crash. Badly smashed up and with a heavy concussion he called us from the hospital bed to congratulate us on the gold. Now that’s how good neighbors treat each other! Thank you Patrik! Wish you a good recovery and I will be seeing you soon.

Hi! I thought Nordic 4 countries(also Iceland) and japan are neighbours! .....(^ .-)~*
Though we have one big wood during us.....umm....named Russia.
Oh, therefore neighbours, NHK filmed Aksel's "Miracle Body special", and Sweden televised Aksel's program in the country!
good neighbours! haha a*q*u*a

The positive is, Ivica is on the podium, yes!, well, that slalom course was made for him... and Bode finally gets his gold medal! Fair sharing of the medals. ;)

@Jansrud Good race Kjetil, enjoyed your slalom run! :)

21. Feb 23:54 - MG said:
Dear Aksel, don't you think that finally it's all providential : Didier Defago won his gold because he really needed it at his age as the accomplishment of all his previous hard work, and you won silver because it was a good test for you not to be disappointed at being surpassed with only 7''. Then your turn came to win gold, and yet it didn't make you forget that "all had made mistakes at that race". Here now Bode Miller takes gold, as he needs it too, you must admit, and here now you DNF. You really have to pass through all and to see your reaction. Well, everybody can play an excited goldwinner pretty well, but not everybody is strong enough to lose beautifully. You've allready proved you are - and here one admires you still greater than if you had won all the olympic gold possible.
And now life goes on to the next races... Go, Aksel!

Aksel, you are still The Man! :) your attitude and performances are super fantastic! I don't care about that slalom which, as already others said, was quite good till that unlucky gate! I admit, it would be nice to see that slalom till the end, but it happens. Congrats to great downhill run, Superman! :) Good luck for GS! Enjoy in olympic spirit!

bye bye :)

Well, DH was excellent! You did a great job; Slalom performance was awesome too, except the disorientation of that wrong gate ;-)
Take it easy, d-u-d-e (@A: *smirk*, kitchen!)
I am with A: still 2 medals (They are not running away. You will not lose them, except you left the window open again) and still 2 chances.

Oh, schade, it looked like Aksel was pretty dissapointed, but that happens, especially in slalom. Still 2 medals in 3 races is cool! and there are two more to go;-) THe DH section was great, and slalom until that dnf-place was pretty ok too. Enjoy the rest of the day!!!

and the entry about Partik made some headlines, I saw it on the internet in some news websites, nice;-)

Honestly, I never thought I would live to see the day when Bode Miller wins 3 medals in 3 starts, gold included, in the olympics. unbelievable story.

@Switzerland: I think I am staying, all in all I am quite stable in my preferences, usually, and see no reason to stop the fun;-)

@Angyal: well, I have not yet seen any interview, will have to do some serious research after the games to catch up with all that!

Last but not least - two words: KJETIL JANSRUD 9TH!!! man, I cannot wait until the GS;-)

are you serious carmie? i haven't been watching nbc much (even though we get it here), because of their massive incopetence in scheduling which events to broadcast (staying away from that channel), and although their olympics media team is more seasoned than the ctv et al conglomerate, i've been disappointed (aside from the opening ceremonies, which was awesome to hear what americans think of canadians) with a lot of their broadcast on air, so i will stick to the large network of experienced and inexperienced reporters on the ctv platform (even when you can tell some of the media people have no clue about the sport they're talking about because that's not their usual beat). the only funny/worst thing i've seen on nbc is sven kramer going off on that poor clueless nbc lady reporter.

anyways drama aside, HAVE A GOOD RUN TODAY!!!! so excited! i'll be watching...well they're showing curling now, and hockey will be on later so i will make sure i watch all the skiing today. lykke til! <----that's about the extent of the norwegian i know. i'm actually starting to understand some of the stuff people are posting here. lol. oh yeah and norway's slaying it in the medal standings. awesome.

Innocent sibling rivalry - doesn't that happen every year? :)

Accidents like these show nationality doesn't matter - when someone gets injured the lines are erased and the flags taken down. The anthems are played, you celebrate your win, but you also worry about those who lost. And hope they'll be beside you once more.

Then again, I could be way off ;)

Some words to the media. It seems likely these journalits, on duty to the media, get more and more to dirty fellows with less and less expertise. In fact, it's just their business to follow the simple media code: Increase circulation/rating. Segregation, divorces, every sensational report are deliberate provocation, are kind of thrillers and that is what hoi polloi likes to read, to hear, to see just as a pastime. Sport is the best sector of society, that simply provides amusement...

Wie wunderbar Aksel! Just saw the Downhill run. :p)

Good to read your blog about how the relationship in sports between neighbouring countries should be, I haven`t known that special relationship before. There are many examples like Austria and Germany too. As long as it consists of teasing , joking against each others it`s very much fun. But media make the situation worse and make a kind of "war" out of it.

By the way: Wasn`t it Aamodt who called the Swedes "Chickens" because of their behavior during that flight, you were blogging about it ? Maybe some Swedes didn`t like that too and tried to get their revenge and so the flame war via newspapers starts.

Congrats to your gold medal ,
Regards from Austria.

Nevertheless, it's the same here in Austria - there was this one guy from Germany (Keppler?) who said the downhill is "too easy" for an olympic downhill - and it filled the commentator with sheer delight to see him score two DNF's (I must admit not only him *g*). It helps when we don't win and the Germans also do not...
BTW: Number 13 is my personal lucky number :) - all the best from Austria!!!

Hei Aksel. Congratulations on your great results so far in Vancouver, more to come we hope! You are a truly great athlete, your career results and achievements speak for themselves and your comeback in Beaver Creek last year was incredible! But what makes it so more spesial, is that you do it with class! We, who know you, know that you are a very generous person with a great heart and a lot of humility! It is down to education I guess (good jobb Bjørn!). I couldn't agree more with you about how mediocre some journalists (and papers) are in Norway and Sweden, writing stupid things about each other. In our family, if a norwegian doesn't win, we are very happy if a swede wins (they are our closest neighbours) and we have a lot of good friends in and from Sweden. Unfortunately, it does not help when we have other cocky atletes who are big mouthed and arrogant towards their swediish competitors when they win ! For a certain big mouthed norwegian competitor in cross country skiing, things have not gone his way so far in the olympics and he doesn't want to speak to the press now ! Let's hope this will teach him some humility (maybe you can help him Aksel?) , because his stupid attitude when things go well does fuel this feud between the norwegian and swedish press. The boy is talented and will win again but let's hope he will be less arrogant. In the meantime most of us swedes and norwegians will continue to enjoy the games and take pride and joy whenever one of us wins !

Both Norwegian and Swedish TV talk nice about each other countries sports men and women. The athletes and their coaches do the same. (In several sports the national coaches are comming from the uposite country.) The smear campaigns are in the news papers and on internet.

Rivalry could be good for the competition but nationalism woun´t. In 1970´ies the Norwegian Atletic Association had a "Beat Sweden campaign". At that time Sweden was better than Norway and the objective was to become as good as the Sweds. Regrettably the media took the slogan and started a hate campaign instead.

Patriks fall is the last of a long list of problems for Sweden in several of the last Olympics. I feel sorry for Patrick and Sweden. Good luck Patrick.

I couldn`t agree more; journalists sometimes act like hungry wolves taking advantage of situations like this to create their catchy headlines... Which might be the the case in this Norwegian-Swedish battle as well.

But to comment what is most concerning in your post;
I am sending all my best thoughts to Järbyn, hoping he will recover soon and be back on track without any complaints...

Hei, Aksel!
I absolutely agree with you.
Olympics games are festival of sports. They should not compete out of ski run. So I love to see that players hugged each other at the goal.

congratulations aksel! it seems that you don't have nerves at all .....

the story remembers me of what went over TV yesterday about the austrian and swiss ski jumpers. the austrian officials wanted to hand in a complaint about some metal piece of switzerland's simon amman's ski, but refrained from it in the last moment. the austrian athletes had their own opinion on that: they said that simon is simply the better ski jumper and that his success is not owed to his euqipment .....

some people are more reasonable than others... :o)

Our country was long isolated.
So it is sometimes very difficuil to talk about the relationship between neighboring countries, such as China and both Koreas.
But talking about Olympic Games, all should be good for all the athletes.

21. Feb 07:32 - mary said:
wow. i didn't know the media was so heavy handed. i just finished watching some of the speed skating events and although some people lost and won, they reached out to each other and congratulated each other, even the coaches. along the year(s) to the olympics a lot of the athletes train together, go to the same comps, travel year round, and some are even friends (although not surprisingly, some are really not friends at all). i've seen some really great examples of sportsman/womanship from so many people and it's really inspiring. that was great of patrick to do that. hopefully his recovery is a speedy one. i don't think viewers, some who might not be athletic or compete in sports/anything else get what the olympics means to a lot of the people in BC right now competing, or what it means to the fans, there abroad, in their home countries. i mean i'm cheering for so many other countries, aside from my own because i appreciate effort and perserverance. there's been so much slinging in the media about so and so athlete and how they're disappointments and such and i just wish that wasn't the story line because i bet most of the people who are doing the media sesh for the olympics can't do half of the stuff the athletes are. it's just sad and unecessary! i've been trying to figure out what's going on with the international media at van2010, but it's kinda hard to get the sentiment since everything here is mostly canadian centric.

there's no point comiserating about bad blood when we can all be concentrating on positives and having good times. congrats again to all the athletes proving themselves and giving me so much to smile about, cheer about, and having my voice hoarse from yelling and my face frozen & hurting because i've been smiling and laughing too much. seriously. so excited for skiing tomorrow, and curling, more sledding, hockey hockey hockey, excited for some boarding next week, more skating, etc. winter oly's are always the best.

Her snur de fort.
Cross country skiing is turning to be more like tour de france, og her må man legge opp til helt andre strategier fremover.
This is just the beginning.
La journalistene svinse videre rundt kalven(e):) Kalven vil uansett bli slaktet når den tid kommer. No mercy!

Kjempe bra jobba!!!

Best wishes to Jarbyn and congratulations to you!

And about the little "competition" between us and our lovely neighbors, I think it's a fun part of it, and i really hope people don't take it too seriously.
I mean i know media really exaggerate the whole thing (as always), but i think this sums it all up:
1. we like to win
2. we like to let the Swedes know it for sure when we do win
3. and most importantly, if we can't win, we always cheer for the Swedes, after all they are like family

Isn't it funny how we like to think of the gold medals as ours? like you athletes can thank the rest of us for winning.

21. Feb 01:16 - Muckl said:
@Petz: I am with you. I mentioned something similar two days ago. The media has become fixated on the sensational; they proved it a lot of time especially in the last week. I got mad-really, commentators *grumml*. I dont want to hear/read anything else about the >troubles< between the Swiss and the Austrians concerning Ski jumping-just pathetic. And today I couldnt believe what I have seen on TV when I zapped: the open coffin of Kumaritaschwili. I know it is a Georgian tradition but why the hell do they have to show it; isnt it sad enough?!? (I stopped watching the news) Stupid #$%$§.

Gott sei dank!

Hope Patrick get well soon!

thats the REAL olympic idea i think!!! and not the stupid and boring comments from the most of the journalists. sometime i thinke we are in a periode of the " cold war " when i hear and read some of the comments of them, but than i see how the sportsman and women are laugh with each other after the competiton - thats really great and i enjoy watching olympics! btw... good luck for the 3rd tomorrow and have fun - need to see you smile while skiing.....

21. Feb 00:58 - Switzerland said:

well, the media needs always something to write/talk about and such things seem to be perfect for it as they're read and discussed by many persons.one should know that often the things written/said are not 100%true and written statements from interviewed persons may either be manipulated or taken out of the original context and put into a new one.-yes,I'm not a big fan of the media in general but after some bad experiences you maybe think twice before believing something...
