Lost the red bib

Posted on 29. November 2009 21:38 - 21 comments

I had the red bib today as the winner of last year’s super-g cup. Lost that to Manny(Osborne Paradis) today, but I’ll be back to fight for it. Always fun when racers win their home races like Manny did today. Also a sad day for the Canadians as possibly their best skier John Kucera got injured. Rumors say tibia fracture. That sucks! Johnny was the most consistent when we were skiing together in Chile this summer. Now packing bags and gonna jump on an early plane tomorrow morning down to Denver.

I shouldn`t make a comment after midnight, especially not after enjoying too much coffee and brownies... However, I just feel that we need a questionnaire - and this is for you as well, Longstockings:
1) For how long time did you believe in Santa Claus?
2) What is your favorite Christmas cookie?
3) Three things you can`t live without at Christmas time...

Have a nice December 1 :)

To change this not so happy subject and turn the attention to something else: how cool is that Werner Heel races with UNICEF logo on his helmet this season! Sweeet!!!

That beats Didier Cuche's cookies helmet, that was one of the coolest helmets until now;-)

KK and Sirius: You trigged my curiosity and I just hade to look at the pictures. Not pretty at all! But as a upcoming nurse I`m sorry to say I have seen worse. Analgesic medications is a necessity in cases like these! Fortunately my only real injury comes from a badly plannedl bike-ride (the odds were against me from the beginning) where I chrased my chin in the gravel, but either doctors, surgery or rehabilitation were required, so I can only imagine the pain (both physical and mental) a crash in this sport can make.
But that`s one of the things that make this sport so interesting, the possible danger combined with the speed, discipline and confidence, and at the same time knowing what hard work lies behind. It really is like you said A., this is a hardcore sport!

Congrats to the solid result, yesterday!:) Hope you leg keeps on getting better and better.

Whenever I see one of those serious skiing accidents like last week-end, I have to think of the horrible crash of Ulli Maier as this had been the first accident I had seen on TV as a kid... Such accidents are just so scary to watch. I hope the rest of the season will be better. No more crashes, please...

What a shocking weekend with two so heavy injures. Hope that TJ and Johnny are getting fit really fast and are both able to comeback to the worldcup, but the most important thing is, that they get well and there wont be more crashes during the next races. Don´t want to see it!
@KK, believe it or not, theese pictures are harmless when you have seen such a broken leg live! It´s not nice and you´ll never forget it! And you definitively start to ski a bit slower!

@Aksel: all the best for the races in BeaverCreek. Let´s rock the GoldenEagle! Can´t see the downhill, but will check out via live-timing!

@ A.:Totally agree with you, skiing guys and girls are hardcore!!!! To race down those hills in that speed, it?s close to madness! But like you say, they do have the confidence and the courage. It seems like the equipment and technology today makes you go faster and faster, and in order to be the best, you have to take some risks. And then accidents will happen. But I guess it?s more important than ever to know your own skills and limitations. And that?s why we love watching this sport so much, the combination of speed, danger and skills is unbeatable. I don?t think that accidents makes the sport less popular, they are just the sad part of it. Although I have to admit, I really hate this part!

All the best to TJ and Kucera.

And Aksel, great to see you back again, keep on rockin'!!!!!

I think that all the skier can do is be as prepared as it's possible, for the season, so there is a confidence in the start gate. They can;t let the images of injuries get to them, and to their minds...

Yeah, I have mixed feelings after this weekend, I am so close to stop watching races because I get so nervous, but at the same time I am re-loving the races, can;t take my eyes off the screen. Maybe that's the matter of age, imagination increases. Those skiing guys are hardcore! Like some commentators said on Sat. - you can;t get more tough than ski racer, probably the toughest athletes in the world.

Sorry to see you losing red bib, but there's enough time to get it back:)
@Aksel: what do you think about these serious crashes at speed disciplines, the safety and how do you handle it when it happens when you're still waiting on your turn to go down? For me it's hard to watch, but I think you guys know the risk. But still, it wasn't the best way to open the season of DH and SG with 2 crashes in 2 days, seeing the helicopters in the air, probably also not the best advertisment for skiing.

Sad to see another serious injury happening this weekend... As we all can see from the picture (yes, it`s the google-picture #5 I`m referring to. @KK; of course I had to take a look), a tibia fracture is a bad injury. And also time-consuming for the athlete. And poor Lanning who`s had his dose of injuries :-(
Wishing all the best for him and TJ!

@Aksel: I am sure that the red bib will be returned to you during this season, keep up the good work :-)

@ KK, thought so! I actually froze / blanked-out the moment I saw that picture so couldn't think or do anything and ended up looking at it for longer than I would like....

Synd du ikke vant i dag, vi holdt på å fryse ihjel når vi stod i bakken å så på! =)

@Sirius: Yepp, that is the picture i'm thinking of....People should not look at that picture...The next time I go skiing, I will go very slow, that's for sure!

30. Nov 04:41 - Sirius said:
@ KK, when you said you regretted that decision, r u referring to the 5th picture when you go to goggle for images under tibia fracture?

Warning for the curious minds that read this message, try NOT to go looking for that picture!!!

I wasn't sure what a tibia fracture is, so I had to google it. After seeing the pictures, i really regretted that decision.....Hopefully John will recover well, and TJ too....

Great race by the Manny-bear today, I guess he can borrow your red bib for a while, you will get it back sooner or later anyway;)

Oh no, one more serious injury this weekend... I`m sorry to hear that.
Nice of you to give the red bib to Osborne Paradis though - just for a while... :)
Have a nice flight to Denver.

@ Aksel Veldig bra gjort! :-)) God reise i morgen og ikke klemmer pakke inn SG Skis. ;-)

Yes, Manny was great today. But I'm really sorry about Johns injury. Unfortunately we won't see him for a longer time in WC. And at the Olympic Games in his country he will not be able to start - that's too bad! Wish him and TJ all the best.

Gratulerer med poeng i dag - det er morsomt å følge med på hvordan det går i løypene. Stå på! :) Den røde trøya skal tilbake. Flott artikkel i NY Times også forresten.

Lykke til videre, og ha en fortsatt fin søndag :)
