Living in a bag

Posted on 16. March 2010 08:35 - 194 comments

After a 24h stop in Oslo it’s time to pack and leave for National Championships. They’re held in Narvik, a two hour flight from Oslo to the north of Norway. Living in a bag for most of the year makes a the mess bigger and bigger towards the end of the season. This is what my dads house look like now. All my stuff. I need to clean this up next time I get back

And this is what my room looked like in Garmisch some hours ago

From military days, and this reminds me of room inspections I used to do . Picture says:

- Normal Alpha Male
- Mid 20?s
- Interests ? sports, outdoors, gadgets/things, having a good time, clothes
- Domestics are done ?whenever?
- Visits home are accompanied by dirty washing and a ?I?m helpless smile?.

If Simen is as bad, poor father

As far as the mess-Men will be Men!

I've just figure out that messy people are not a clutz like me. If I had a mess like this I would get my foot caught in something, trip and hit my head or knee and be limping for a few days. Just shows what great balance and reactions you have and a very nice father.

Good luck on the rest of your races!

Hi everyone again!

I just remember that a few days ago I told you about an article in a newspaper. It was saying that Norwegian guys are the best husbands (partners) in the world because they know to wash dishes and laundry, to cook and clean up.
Now I saw this pictures and I don't understand... Something doesn't fit!
I wonder what happened?

1. That news was fake?
2. Aksel is not ready for marriage?
3. Aksel and his team mates are the exception that confirm the rule?

I'm just joking...bye!

Whew! How do you get around?? Your poor dad!

16. Mar 21:07 - Kate said:
@Angela UK
The hotel room is actually not that bad, all things considered. After all, there's no way you want to put anything that's sweaty/damp in a bag or a drawer. That just makes everything else more pungent... better to leave it out to dry. Though the floor is not the best place for drying...
I certainly was party to some equivalent messes in my college fencing days, and traveling in Southern Africa last summer. One also has to remember that when it's been a long day/heavy exercise and there's a shower/change of clothes between you and a hot meal, the putting away clothes bit tends to much less important than the finding the clean clothes bit.

Aksel - are you sure there wasn't a family living in that hotel room whilst you were skiing?? One person can't possibly have all that stuff?? lol

If all those clothes are yours did you have a fashion parade in front of your team mates before you left in the mornings? Did you try all your race suits on and give the guys a twirl before you decided what to wear??? lol

And please don't tell me that you asked if your bum looked big??? lol

For the record it doesn't.......... !!!

BTW - good luck for the next races.....

Do you and Kjetil have to share a room when you travel? His pillow is tiny!

@Longstockings I was wondering when you would surface and comment. And I thought the same thing about you needing humor and was wondering if this was the solution from Aksel.....In fact this is the first thing I thought when I saw the pics....lol

@A "Where's Waldo"?.......too funny....:) Also did you notice the total disrespect for the Spandex?..on the floor in a pile and over the barbell? We need a comment on that one.!

@Aksel: Dahlin', I know you're traveling a lot and busy winning Olympic medals and whatnot, so the news may not have reached you yet. But the modern technology is making some wonderful advances these days and coming up with really cool things to improve our everyday lives. Recently they came up with this rather amazing gadget to help our rooms look slightly less... erm... post-apocalypse. It's called The Clothes Hanger*. Clever little things, actually...

By the way, was this my cheer-up? As much as I love seeing Elfie again (How ya doing, Kjets?) your dirty laundry wasn't exactly what I expected, Aksel... It's funny alright, but rather unorthodox. haha

@A.: didn't Waldo always lose an item he had on him on each page of the book? So... if Aksel's the new Waldo, is he going to strip? just asking...

* I wonder, if Apple ever comes out with a model, will it be called iHang?

I totally get the whole living out a bag thing. Whenever I'm on vacation, stuff just comes flying out of the bags, landing where it may, then stuffed back in and dumped out when I get home. I am so not a neat packer. One year I drove from Massachusetts to Texas on a whim and would just transfer my stuff from the car to the hotel room and back. My car looked almost as bad as Aksel's pics, but somehow I knew where everything was...

16. Mar 16:26 - christiane said:
hehe, sorry for putting the thought of it into your minds now guys....

@Mac - where to start???? Grab the guy, lock him into the room with a hover and a washing machine....

No, just joking! I can understand it a bit actually, i was on tour with a group of dancers once, doing the tour - managment, and had to stay in a different city of Austria, Germany or Switzerland every evening/night... Living only in hotels and out of the suitcase - i hated it. And it is hard to stay "organised" and clean sometimes... And when you finally get back home you literally open the bags and let everything drop out of them onto the floor!!! Then you have to organise washing and stuf, and that takes a little time. Plus - you have to come down a little from all the travelling first....
Mind you - i was living by myself haha, so noone had to give up on his space haha

a few bottles of wine, a lot loads of washing and food now and then, then it is all fine - one day.... hehe

16. Mar 16:20 - Kate said:
Oops..that was me without the name.

@Yuko, I had the same throught - hotel beds tend to be like airplane seats - made for itty bitty little people.

@Jules - housekeeping does give up sometimes... from experience, they'll pick up enough to make a path to the bed. But they won't fix suitcase explosions...

@Aksel, given how many things seem to be stolen from regular luggage at airports, I was wondering if skiers - especially the big name ones (like you!) - have issues with items being stolen from luggage. I can imagine that some items would fetch a pretty nice price on E-Bay, and the ski-equipment brand duffles must be a bit of a give away as to whose bags they are...

And tell Kjetil to secure the laptop...must preserve the PC so you can blog for us!!

Much luck, fast skis, and the wind at your back in Narvik, Aksel. Aloha to Kjetil, Lars, and your posse too! And blessings and respect to Daddy Svindal...the patience (and space) of a saint!

And you know "I need to clean this up next time I get back" doesn't really sound like he intends to actually 'get back' any time soon, does it!? ;-)

@Teekanne: Ah, you mean like the giftbags they give out at awards ceremonies and things like that?? That would be cool. Although dirty clothes might not be the way to go.
At least I'd like to think of myself as not that "groupie". Not just yet in any case... LOL

@A: There might not be toes but at least loads of socks :)
I think it's some sort of process: First there were toe-pics and then there was that many-feet-but-unfortunately-in-socks-pic and now there's a (amongst other things)socks-pic. Soon there'll be a covered-feet-pic again and then the toe-pics will return.

And I totally agree when it comes to cleaning up other people's messes, especially a guy's mess: There's no way I will EVER do that.

OOOOOh MMMMMMy GGGGGGGGod!!! You cannot even spot the flashy norwegian jackets anymore!

Good luck in the NC and best of luck to get back to your mess in a couple of days.

Ladies, I hope none of you are voluntarily cleaning up after a guy's mess. That's a good way to lose a man's interest. While you're cleaning up his sty... he's running off with the hot girl that refuses.

But seriously, whoever selected the team's crazy pants and jackets knew these guys' housekeeping habits very, very well... as they can be easily found even in this state of disarray :) Too funny!

Become the sponser of some luggage company and maybe they could make you a bag that keeps you organized. Sounds like a win win situation.
Full disclosure: This does sort of look like my room when I am trying to get ready and have put on every outfit I own. By the time I get ready I have to get out the door and leave a mess behind. However I try to pick things up the next day:)

Phew...that brings back some memories... not that my condo doesn't look pretty chaotic by the end of the week when my ski, ballet, skating and workout bags are strewn around. But there was nothing like the chaos of trying to dry out sailing equipment in a tiny dorm room. My poor room-mates... eau-de-sweaty-dry-suit ranks way up there in the nasty smell scale...

And the chaos of moving abroad... my tiny flat in Scotland was a similar bomb-site for weeks before my move... somehow I had moved abroad with just 4 suitcases and had to move back to another country with 8 suitcases and 15 boxes (and one big customs nightmare!). That's what PhDs will do to you....

At least @Aksel still has a room(s)... I arrived home from grad school one Christmas to find that my bedroom had become my dad's office. I was relegated to the guest room and a corner of the attic... So much for the comforts of home. Then again, I hadn't lived in the same country as my parents for at least a couple of years at that point...

Lieber Aksel,

And I know it's been asked before - not sure if it's been answered though - but don't you guys ever mix up your stuff?! And then on race day you find yourself with a race suit that doesn't fit coz you packed Kjetil's by mistake? I know it would happen to me...
