Carlo Janka, best skier in the world this winter

Posted on 12. March 2010 12:45 - 115 comments

Carlo Janka wins the giant slalom today and with that he also takes home the overall World-Cup. Best skier in the world season 09/10. Not much else to say. I went out in the first run, so I could watch the whole race from the side-line. So exciting! Twice  I've been in the same situation as Janka and Raich was today. It's almost too much. The feeling Janka had today when he crossed the finish line and knew he had won the overall is  unreal, in a good way...

Today Schumi has his comeback in F1 today! Have a look at this race guys. Hope to see a thrilling thing. That could be st. for you christiane (well, for Axl anyway). Can't remember how long I haven't looked at a F1 race... mm, really don't know. But today I will do. At 1300 (CET), well, at this time I'll probably wide awake, haha (but not quite yet... longer brasil party last night... "Samba... dejame' :))

@christiane F1 ... think that is sth for u as a car 'freak'?
@A. Cool, you followed the SL race, haven't seen the parents' 'sweeeet' interview, schade. ;)

Cool (after his OL desaster, not suitable to remember...oweia) Nicht schlecht, nicht schlecht Herr Specht, haha. ;) Aber hatte auf Kostelic gesetzt and the upcoming 'Cowboy' Cousineau, with a great 1st run. Ok, I dare say the sole comment about the SL...mm. Do you have to add sth. gals and guys? Would be pleased if you do!

@Sharon Oh I really love your comment, It's heart-rending. :)

Now it's time to go out, it's Saturday evening and Brasil night in FRA with Capoeira (it's like dancing, haha) performances.. I'm curious about it.

Have a joyful, relaxed evening! ;)

Hi Aksel

Cheer up Aksel, you do not return with bare hands !!!

Several medals and the 4th in the Gesamtweltcup! That's not nothing. Don't forget you have been first in the Gesamtweltcup in 2007 and 2009 !!

A hunderstel of a second, a little moment can dicide, and you are out of the game.

This year was the year of the "cold blooded" Swiss: Carlo Yanka, Didier Cuche, etc. as well as Benjamin Raich. Really hard competition.

You Aksel are definitly an equal competitor !!!!! You have got the nerves too, as well as a lot of other gifts . As I know you, you woudn't like to have light-weight competitors ... !

For 2011 every thing is open. That will be a big challenge for you !!!
Wow, that will be exiting, I am already looking forward to watch everything.

I wish you a good Spring and Summertime to relax and to be back in superbe condition (mentally and physically).

Enjoy life in any aspect. May all wishes come true for you !!

Keep in touch on your blog. In this sense here a music video to relax, also for everybody on the blog.

@ JMH

I echo what you said. I drifted away from skiing over the last couple of years and thanks to the Olympics, particularly Aksel and the Norwegian team brought be back.................so I thank them for that.

I would have missed so much otherwise!!!!!

great idea about a team photo for the blog!!

13. Mar 11:20 - JMH said:
Six podiums in a month resulting in Olympic gold, silver and bronze, and 200 plus WC points is not bad going by any standard.

There may not be any globes this year but more importantly I think the Norwegian team has done more to raise the profile of alpine skiing to a new wider audience than any other team, and brought people back who stopped watching like me. Austria, Switzerland and USA might have more resources in money and people, but I think your team ?spirit? achieved more.

- Aksel for his Olympic performances which inspired so many by going from serious injury to Olympic champion in just over 2 years. The physical and mental effort to do that i find incredible. And for once a successful sportman, who is also a good sportsman.

- Aksel and Kjetl for their ?combined? performance in the giant slalom and the associated team celebrations, bringing fun into the competition with their team spirit

- All the dancers in the MJ video, watched by millions, and making everyone laugh. I cannot imagine the Swiss or Austrians doing that a (or wanting to do that)!

I hope you now have the time to celebrate the successes of the last month, before starting to focus on next season. How about a picture of all the team, including all your support staff on you next blog?

Dear Aksel,
Thanks for introducing me to the highest level of skiing performance. It was not always easy waking up at 3 am east coast US to watch you race in Norway & Garmisch-PA Germany. But well worth the loss of sleep to see your expertise on the slopes, your professionalism in your sport and life and your ability to share with everyone the goodness that happens to those who believe and work hard. Sharing your website with my daughter has helped her to become a more disciplined athelete. Here's to you, the greatest. Keep being "Big" because it makes you Huge in the skiing world. Hope to see more of you on Universalsports which is how I "saw" your face every morning. I am a better person for having blogged you and followed and learned about you and your sport. Take care and God bless. I will continue to watch you and hope one day to watch you from the stands or chat with you. You will always be my "brush with greatness". Good Luck, Good Day and God Bless.

but not again J.'s discussion. why? does it matter? both nice people, seems that they could not be different though, but noone who does not know them would know the truth. so why talking about it anyway. it is someone's private life. Nothing personal, people, but I think what's private is private unless made public by the person interested and I wish Aksel is reasonable enough not to even consider sharing the most private stuff on the website. nothing good comes from sharing private stuff in public.
good night/nice day. Nice comments everyone;-)

Aloha Aksel...congrats to Carlo Janka. Indeed, he gave the best run of his life.

But guess what? You're both winners because you both stayed consistent on the World Cup AND the Olympics! Of the top 4 rankings, 3 of you earned Olympic medals, 2 are gold medalists, and coming off these stats is simply amazing! It shows that champions remain consistent through all types of competition, good and bad. I'm especially impressed, though, that although the Olympics aren't counted towards the standings, all of you competed anyway and then came back to the tour and posted consistently top tier runs.

I didn't get it, about being excited for Carlo and just watching...but now I do. It wasn't just this GS course and watchin him win...it was for the whole WC season PLUS all the successes at the Olympics. light bulb for me.... You all earned it, it wasn't a walk in the park, and you still gave it everything. That's what I was hoping for in a champion.

And Kjetil...isn't he great? i'm looking forward to following him, you, and the rest of the Vikings.

I'll have to sit next to @Buckhead Baby at church. There's power in prayers, and I didn't pray hard enough for you to win....but my prayers were answered anyway because God showed us what champions are supposed to be both on and off the course. I'll roll in a few favors for next season, though, just in case....

God Bless, Aksel. You're the best in my book....

Greatness is not always measured in medals or trophies. Greatness comes from being someone that others can respect because of his sportsmanship and sense of fair play. Even if you never win another race you would be considered one of the greats in Alpine skiing because of your attitude toward your fellow skiers. Your kind words for Carlo Janka, Erik Guay, and Kjetil Jansrud in your blog speak volumes about your character. I love how you said that watching the GS was exciting after your DNF. You could have whined about not being able to finish the race. But instead you chose to channel your disappointment into the positive act of cheering on the other skiers. We need more sportsmen like you and less who complain when things don't go their way. Your sportsmanship is a great example for both young and older people to follow.

Thank you for sharing your blog. Also thank you for a great season. Fourth place overall is super! I think next season will be very interesting with you, Benjamin Raich, Didier Cuche (I hope he's not retiring yet), and Carlo Janka all contending for the overall World Cup title. Enjoy a well-deserved rest.

Lieber Aksel,
wieso bist Du so enttäuscht ?
Vielen Dank, dass Du uns hast teilnehmen lassen an all Deinen Emotionen.
Viele Grüße an Deine Mannschaftskollegen !!
Sonnige Grüße aus Südtirol !!!!

Well sometimes we win and sometimes we lose. But you have had a pretty great year, I am sure one you will not soon forget. And really your not losing if you are doing what you love to do.

I don't think you should feel sad about anything overall. Enjoy your time off....WE WILL MISS WATHCING YOU!!!!!!

A song for you, and it's not a good video, and some of the lyrics do not apply....but the sentiment is there just the same! It's a great song. And you are going to ride on. :)

Sorry for the end of the race, but we can not always be the brightest. Anyway stay a great sportsman (literally and figuratively) and I do always enjoy looking you, even if not always smile. Stay for me, the greatest skier of this sezon.sa enjoy every opportunity and every race that will follow. Take care of yourself so that we can enjoy more of your presence in the competitions to come.

well done Carlo Janka - have to say, deserved winner for the season! He shot up like a rocket this winter! Fair dues to him.

Since i had to shoot of from yesterday's blog:

@bergfex - party in new York???????? ah, davon weiß ich gar nix wirklich, was hab ich n da verpaßt? Wo ist mein Ticket? Und überhaupt....

@ A - baby, the Bugatti is reserved for us 2, i am not goona abuse him as a taxi. The car would be traumatised afterwards..... And Aksel can be Girl - magnet whatever, because WE will be super MEN - magnet with that car hehe.... ;)
We have to organise somethin here....

@ Buckheadbaby - yep, i guess A. and me are the way our comments are here. that speaks for something cool ah? hehe. All i need is food and a bit once in a while and some good sense of humour and i m there ;)

@ everyone - all i can say is: you really are a real winner only if can appreciate others winning too.
Nothing more to add.

So sorry about your DNF Axl! A german skiexpert said: "...not a typical Svindal fault, typical innerski fault, that normally happens to youngsters...that shouldn't happen to a top athlete..." oha, ;) that's a plain analyse, haha. But that's half-important. The concentration thing, mm well, don't know, you know it better. But you had nothing to fight for, that requested your whole concentration. Just speculative thinking.... The best and important thing is, now you made another new experience, you could follow the overall world-cup fighting from an outside perspective, with all your former experiences you've made as a two times overall winner. That is wow, exciting! The funniest thing at the ende of the race today: An interview with the "iceman" Janka, who get the overall WCup. About his "Iceman-Image" a reporter asked him "melts the iceman Carlo Janka today?". Beyond all questions about his skiing, he gave a strange and extra cool unemotional answer. Janka just said: "Muss mal schauen wie der Tag heute so verläuft, aber die Chancen sind sicher da." He's so funny, although he doesn't want to be funny. Think he can't be amusing, if he wants to be, haha. He's for me as a adroid in skiing and in (public) behaviour. He reminds me of 'Mr. Data', a Star Trek Enterprise figure, who/that (?) aspires after humanity behaviour and feeling... an interesing and kind of weird protagonist ;)

What about these two 'Iceman' pics? Is that a new pic riddle for us? The right one is the original, the left one the faulty. How many faults are in it? 6, 10... :) Think Axl, you are fall (a bit) for that cool man... But blessedly you are still the complete opposite ladd, haha. :))

@Jansrud Och, so close, but far from 'heaven'! ;). But loved your runs. Well, In the 2nd you treated the skis too severely, too much willing, too much wanting?! ;) Gratulerer Kjetil! You really had a good season, expecially in GS. Oh ja, the man of the second runs. ;)

Fortsatt, Stor klem

@buckheadbaby I have nothing to add to these words...he's simply the best in every way.

Congrats to Janka...so young and already winer of overall WC. I'm not sorry for Benni, he was just not good enough, you can't do anything about that. He can try again next year but I hope Aksel will win next year.

@Aksel have a great summer, good training and zero injurys.

Aksel, congratulation on your season, and thank you for sharing bits of your life with us and for showing us what it good sportsmanship means. You show such respect, excitement, and love for your sport and your fellow athletes/friends. I appreciate that, in a world where those who make it all about themselves tend to grab attention. Hope you get to rest and relax for a bit and continue to share with us through the blog.

@buckheadbaby said it best! Aksel, you are amazing. Thank you for your sportsmanship. In this world of "bigger is better" and "winning is everything", it's very refreshing to see an athlete actually get pleasure from seeing a friend win. Good on you!

I can't wait to read more of what you get up to in the off season.

Looking forward to next season!!!

@Buckheadbaby...Atlgal USA

Fine words! But precisely, the point is that the world is actually in the process of becoming a much better place to live, because Aksel's attitude to life is infectuous :))) And also, because we're all of us tied together by the good thoughts which we actually adress to each other. That's how the earth still turns round, I think, despite all that is disgusting in it, but let's not talk about that.

@Aksel
I think you're now warm enough, but you'll soon get hot as on a sunnybeach with all the warm words you keep getting :)))

Congrats to Carlo Janka...as for you, what else can I say but "THANK YOU" for an outstanding 09/10 season, I've enjoyed the insight and prosepective through your eyes. You have shown true sportsmanship throughout and that is what makes you a champion in my book. Looking forward to continuing the journey with you for a long time. xoxo

Aksel, first of all, congrats for your excellent season! It was bad that you fell out, but you did your job. Kudos to Janka for being so extremely good during the whole 09/10 and finally congrats to Ted Ligety for the deserved small crystal globe! Amazing race, exciting finals in Garmisch as well as the whole season! Can't wait for tomorrow's slalom...
All the best :-)

well, good for the competition and the races themselves that different people win;-), and overall WC being 23 is a great achievement. The next seasons will be certainly interesting. AS much as I am happy for Carlo (actually predicted the win;-), poor Benni is again second! On the other hand, he should be proud that even if he does not win the overall (again), he is the world cup overall podium for so many consecutive years.

I did not see the races themselves, what happened in the 1st run that Aksel dnf'ed? anyway, It happens, its skiing, so I would not worry. It is important to have a short memory for some cases, soon some free time to rest and the next season in the sight.

bye!

@ Aksel
Dear Aksel, may be I shouldn't tell you the following, cause we're all equal humans regardless of our achievements, but on the other hand, why not, it's good to say good words, and it's good to receive them... So, I mean, I'm feeling so happy observing your reactions on whatever happens to you or to your mateskiers, to see the God's light which is shining so bright in you. You're so BLOODY right in your behaviour (it's your own superlative, isn't it?) May God give you forces and all the possibilities to do everything what you would like to do, and may He make you feel happy. Impossible not to smile happily just thinking about you.
And yes, good work Carlo, let's be cheerful for him, that's his day. Maybe it'll all melt his ice a little bit ;-)

Aksel, you wonder why people think so much of you? Re-read this last entry and you will see why. :) To be able to stand on the sidelines and find a race you went out on exciting is a true testament to your competative, resilient spirit. If all of us could have that outlook on life and the hand it deals us, this world would be a much better place to live.

Thank you for this blog and allowing us to experience life and the sport of skiing through your eyes.
